Formby FC results 1948/9
This is a slightly imcomplete list. We don’t have the date or score for our home game against Runcorn Reserves. However, we do know that it was a win, and that between it and the Haydock C&B home game we scored 9 and conceded 3.
Despite losing superhuman goalscorer Jack Ball to perennial rivals Marine a couple of weeks into the season, our firm didn’t dip from last term’s high. Ball was replaced by Pym Gittens who got a hat trick on his debut and kept on going. Ball returned in March and it was only 25 minutes until he scored again.
In nearly a century of trying, we registered our only cup win over Marine, en route victory in the Liverpool Amateur Cup final. It’s still the only time we’ve ever retained a trophy.
We improved on the previous season’s runner-up position to take the league title, the only time we’ve ever done a league and cup double.
